A Genuinely New Take on Dungeon Fantasy

I was so sure I was over the dungeon fantasy genre in RPGs--then I read His Majesty the Worm. Now I'm going back into the mythic underworld for at LEAST one more ride, because this game demands play!

Exceptional, Inventive Statement on What TTRPGs Can Be

I LOVE His Majesty the Worm. Every part of this system sings, and every single part seems designed with intensive, focused care into the table experience Josh wishes to foster. Some parts that I want to shout out:
- The lore in the game is sparse and anticanonical, but the tidbits we do get PUNCH. The four Realms (Weird, Welkin, Wastes, and Weald), the Gnostic-esque human religion based on the Major Arcana, even the way Fay characters are named take a small bit of description and use it to engender so much creativity and inspiration within the reader.
- The game takes advantage of tarot as a resolution. Tarot aren’t just a stand in for dice, you can draw cards, save them for later, place them facedown, etc. The core resolution is simple, intuitive, and exciting.
- The Challenge (combat) system is intensely exciting. Snappy, fast-paced— your initiative is your to-hit TN, you have a hand of cards you spend to take actions, and the cards and suits you draw can be used tactically in the best ways possible.
- The Meatgrinder table and the rules for the Crawl phase are excellent GM tools. Plot out dungeon rooms, draw on Meatgrinder, and marry the Meatgrinder result to the room you’re in. It fosters creativity and improvisation on the GMs part, and creates an ever-changing and mercurial underworld for the players to explore.

I love all of it, and I’ll be running for a long time. Exceptional, exceptional game.

10/10

His Majesty the Worm is a wonderful experience in a megadungeon campaign. The city generation and card play during the challenge phase are things that really stood out to me.

My current group is about to make the switch over once we finish our current game and they are very excited. I'm genuinely surprised this game hasn't had more attention.

Mythic?

There’s an interesting mix of the gritty and high archetype of classical fairy stories in the video if this beautiful tome. The game is laser focused on its play loop delve, camp, then return to the surface. The tarot card system is taking me a bit to wrap my head around as I’m not used to thinking of it in terms of odds or making successes. It’s explained very well, so don’t let that be any sort if deterrent. The setting suggested in brief snippets of lore is super intriguing and quite unique. You can easily imagine playing characters in this world.
I’m still about 1/2 through and am excited to get to the dungeon generation stuff and the DM advice.

Amazing!

Beautiful, original, and highly entertaining sourcebook. Possibly the best indie RPG I have ever picked up in terms of production aesthetic and thoughtful design. Cannot recommend highly enough.
